Become A Volunteer At The Historic Conservatory Of Flowers

Volunteering at the Conservatory of Flowers is a great way to learn more about tropical plants, meet people with similar interests and share your knowledge and enthusiasm for plants with visitors. We invite you to become a Greeter, a Docent, a Horticultural Volunteer or a Children's Jungle Guide.

Volunteers needed:

  • Greeters* welcome visitors, check tickets and answer general questions
  • Gift Store Volunteers sell souvenirs to visitors in our gift kiosk.
  • Docents provide visitors with information about the plant collections and the Conservatory itself
  • Horticultural Volunteers* work directly with our plant collections and nursery specialists
  • Children's Jungle Guides lead 3rd, 4th and 5th grade classes on scheduled tours through the Conservatory

Training Provided:

  • The training program begins Monday, January 26, 2009 and will be held every Monday afternoon from 1:30 to 4:30 pm through March 23, 2009. An additional 1-3 weeks of training takes place at the conclusion of the nine-week program depending on the volunteer position. The materials fee is $50 per person.

You'll Learn:

  • All about the Conservatory, its history and function
  • The basics of plants and their amazing adaptations, threats to the rain forest, and the importance of ecosystems
  • Age-appropriate presentation and facilitation, and practice tour(s)

Volunteers who sign up for the training are required to commit to one year of service from June 30, 2009 to June 30, 2010. Jungle Guides and docents must be able to lead 2 tours per month. Interested volunteers should contact Lee Edwards, Volunteer Manager, before January 20th at (415) 722-6650 or ledwards@sfcof.org.

* Full training program not required for this position
