More time on your hands

New Day's Resolution: Get a Hobby

The new year is a perfect time to try out a new hobby. While there is no shortage of things to spend your spare time on, everyone benefits when you use your hobby (new or old) for a good cause.

I only started quilting in 2000. I loved it so much that in 2002 I purchased what is known as a Longarm quilting machine to help me. With the addition of this machine, I was able to quilt better and more often. I didn't need a houseful of quilts, so the decision to quilt for others was a relatively easy one. Giving these quilts to others in need made me feel great, and now, I do a lot of charity quilts. In as little as a weekend, I can make a small or large quilt to give to someone who doesn't have something to keep them warm.

This hobby quickly became a pastime and then it turned into a passion and a calling. Last year, my husband, Mike, and I started Quilters4Quilters. This nonprofit's goal is to make and distribute quilts and quilting supplies to fellow quilters who have lost the tools of their hobby. We try to collect general sewing supplies, sewing machines, sergers, and any type of craft items that people can use and put them in capable and willing hands.

Right now, we're focusing on the Mississippi Gulf Coast. This area took the brunt of Hurricane Katrina, and many families are still living in FEMA trailers. My goal is to give out sewing machines, and supplies, including fabric, to the people who can help themselves and others. We really love to give gifts that keep on giving. When we give a quilter supplies, he or she can then make quilts for others. The growth possibility is enormous.

Even if you're not a quilter, perhaps you can use your hobby to help others. And, my wish is that everyone would go through their closets and donate a sewing machine, serger, an extra pair of scissors, or anything that could be of use to the people we help. You can even stop by your local store and pick up a few low-cost items that would help as well.

Do what you do with purpose and passion, and others will be inspired and their lives will be made better.
