Know Your Valve

Familiarizing yourself with your shut-off valve will save you bunches.

In the unfortunate event of a pipe bursting, you really need to know how to shut off the water (so you can prevent more than ten gallons of water a minute drenching your carpets or neighbors below). Depending upon where you live, your main shut-off valve location will vary. Conduct a little scavenger hunt this weekend and look near your water heater, by your water meter, or near the clothes washer. Make sure everyone in the house knows where it is in case Niagara Falls happens when you leave the kids at home for a night on the town.

This is super important! My water heater burst the other night and I had no flooding! Which was also nice because there wasn't a ton of water to mop up. The gift that keeps on giving!
