5 minutes of caring

BYOT

Bring your own toiletries on a hotel stay.

If you're headed out of town this weekend (or any weekend) and your plans include a stay in a hotel, bring your own bath and body items in order to reduce waste. Sure, you're technically 'paying' for those miniature shampoos and lotions, but most of those are only used once and then tossed away. Save the world when you travel by packing your own toothpastes and shaving gels. Or, if you do need to make use of the hotel-provided conditioner and soap, take it with you and use it until it's gone. Or, you can always give it away.

Great reminder, Sam. I'm going away this weekend and we always bring our own, but sometimes we still open the ones at the hotel because they're so convenient. Or, we bring them home unopened and they sit in a bag in our linen closet. This time, I'll make it a point NOT to open the hotel ones and leave them for the next person, and I'll also pull out the bag we have already and donate them to someone who could really use them.

These items are often mentioned as welcome donations at homeless and/or domestic violence shelters. I always pack them up every day I stay at a hotel and distribute them when I get back home.

Yes, chances are great that there will be less waste by taking the items with you, rather than leaving them for the next person who may not be as waste conscious. If you are staying multiple nights, leave them out until you leave so housekeeping does not replace any on your stay (plastic!!) Once you are home donate the items to a shelter where they are desperately needed.

When I do open them at the hotel, I make sure to bring home the unused portions, and then I take them with me on other trips (they are easier to pack than regular size bottles) and use them until they are all gone. Or, I'll take unopened bottles home and put them in my guest bathroom for overnight guests to use.

As Linda said, if you take the toiletries the hotel offers you can always hand them out in a "goody" bag to homeless people around your area. They will definitely not being going to waste with them, and it will be much appreciated.

I agree with Liz. Please, please do this. Homeless people will definitely appreciate them. If you're uncomfortable giving them out directly, you can save up a handful or a sack for the local shelter.
