5 minutes of caring

Double Up

Double Up

On the groceries, that is.

Our pantries are full of stuff we buy and never seem to be in the mood for. As such, when it's time for the local food drive, we end up donating our unwanted items and not our first choices. To change this, buy two of everything when you hit the grocery store today. Double up on that canned corn and on the cereal. Then, have the cashier bag the items separately. On your way home, swing by your local shelter or food bank and drop off the food so they can get it to folks who badly need it.

An even better thing to do would be to write a check to your local food bank. In Michigan, we have a 50% Food Bank Income Tax Credit. Monetary contributions can be stretched to provide 20 times (or more) the assistance compared to purchasing from the grocery store. Items purchased at the store cost approx. $2 per pound. The cost agencies pay at the Second Harvest Gleaners Food Bank = 6 cents per pound for produce and 16 cents per pound for everything else. So, to make an even bigger difference, why not do a little research to find out if you have a food bank in your area. :)
