Pass (On) the Turkey

Can you go meatless for Thanksgiving?

If you think that Thanksgiving without turkey is like Thanksgiving without football, consider this: Over 900,000 barrels of oil are needed to deliver, thaw, bake and baste those fat dinnertime birds. So, going vegetarian (or even vegan) for Thanksgiving is great for the environment. And it's easier to do than you think. Just visit In a Vegetarian Kitchen for a list of great ideas for a meatless Thursday. Or head on over to The Veggie Table to browse their vegetarian Thanksgiving menu. If you're not ready to sacrifice some traditions, at least think of skipping meat once this week.

Last night a friend of mine had a Thanksgiving dinner at her house, hosting about 50 people. My friend and her roommate ended up sacrificing the "turkey money" to buy a bus pass for a homeless person so he could get to where he needed to be ... and decided to not have turkey for the evening's festivities. It ended up working great ... the sides are the best part anyway! I give special thanks this Thanksgiving for my young friends who were so generous to meet the need of the man needing a bus pass ... and also for the wonderful and yummy non-turkey Thanksgiving dinner we enjoyed last night. The turkey was not missed at all! :)

This will be my 8th vegetarian Thanksgiving. (I became vegetarian 8 years ago.) Since the rest of my family eats meat, I use Quorn cutlets. They're a quick and easy turkey substitute, especially compared to a Tofurkey Roast.
