MORE TIME ON YOUR HANDS
WEDNESDAY, APRIL 8, 2009 (Not) Lost in TranslationCool Person Amanda Parker and her small business are lending a hand to nonprofits. Here's why she's doing it and how your favorite nonprofit can enter to receive free translation services.
A couple of months ago, a local non-profit contacted P & L Translations needing a Spanish translation. The translation was going to provide resources for victims of domestic violence: who to call, where to go, and how to get help. The non-profit agency called the next day to say that they discovered there was no money in their budget allocated for translations. Why did this vital information not get into the hands of those who may need it? Budget cutbacks were the sole reason. It was then that we knew we had to do something to help. When we researched non-profit agencies in our hometown of Nashville, we discovered that many non-profits that serve the Hispanic community are facing budget cutbacks that affect their ability to provide translated information to their Spanish speaking clients. "We're offering this service because donations to local non-profits are down, but the need to communicate is growing," according to Janine Libbey, a partner at P & L Translations. "Nashville has been very good to our company, and we want to do our part by helping non-profits at a time when their services are so important." Here's what we decided to do.P & L Translations will provide free Spanish translations for non-profits located in the Middle Tennessee area:
The first ten certified 501(c)3 organizations who apply at the beginning of each month during 2009 will receive free English to Spanish translations of up to 250 words.
