Two-wheeled Change

Donate your old bike.

If you can't quite hop on your bike to get to work (or for exercise), then don't leave it sitting in your garage. There are lots of people - both nearby and around the world - who could use your old two-wheeler (training wheels optional). Here's a quick list of organizations that can do some good with your old bike:

In the Nashville area a group called the Center for Living and Learning (Franklin, TN) refurbishes bikes as part of a larger vocational rehab program for people with mental disabilities.

There is a new non-profit in Birmingham promoting easy and equal access to cycling by providing affordable bicycle maintenance, services, and education, as well as a forum for sharing bicycle knowledge, activism and community. The Bici Cooperative can be found at www.bicicoop.org and have their Grand-Opening this Friday with a race.

We have a cool shop here in Richmond called "Richmond Re-Cycles" that recycles used bikes. During the 2005 Christmas season they put a sign out that said, "Free Bikes" and people were like, "Are you serious?" Great company! You can read an article on them by C.I.C.L.E. here:

And the company's web site is here:

I am a physical therapist in Charlotte, NC and an adult patient of mine is looking for adult training wheels to get back on the bike after a devastating injury. Any ideas where she can find these?? I know this isn't exactly a charity option you were probably looking for here. You can email me at snorbet@gmail.com
Thanks!
