Presenting, Pithy & Philly

PRESENTING
First, we’d like to extend a big welcome to our newest partner, The Tomorrow Fund. We met their president Zac a few weeks ago, and immediately knew we shared the same mission, and in many ways, the same membership.

The Tomorrow Fund is dedicated to harnessing the energy, enthusiasm, and resources of young Nashville residents above the age of 22 in an effort to serve the community. The Fund seeks to build community awareness, leadership and responsibility by establishing a pattern of community service and charitable giving.

Check out their site to learn more, and also click here for info on their upcoming gathering at local pizzeria and pub Mafiaoza’s.

Welcome Zac and friends!

PITHY
Second, thanks to Steve Haruch of the Nashville Scene’s “Pith in the Wind” weblog for his post yesterday pointing people in our direction. We’re appreciative of the local love. Thanks Steve!

PHILLY
And finally, Sam’s in Philadelphia for the long weekend. You can keep up with him at his blog, as he’s posted a bit and served up some photos of he and his wife Lynnette as they trip the light Phantastic.

Hopefully Ernesto will leave Sam and Lynnette alone this weekend.

Have fun Sam!

(ok, I’ve exceeded my two exclamation mark limit – I do apologize.)

Have a great Labor Day weekend.

2 Minutes on 2

He's got 13 minutes left.

Sam got 2 of his 15 minutes of fame this afternoon, speaking on behalf of bloggers everywhere (or at least bloggers in Tennessee) when he was interviewed by a video journalist from WKRN in Nashville.

Will Christians Vote Corker in November

They tied the story into President Bush's visit today to Nashville for a fundraiser for senate hopeful Bob Corker. To balance out their interview with a "Conservatives for Corker" representative, they tapped Sam for the other side of the pillow, er, I mean, story.

Sam Davidson - CoolPeopleCare

As a frequent and insightful blogger of all things political, religious, cultural and otherwise, Sam has made a name for himself in a few of Nashville's blogger communities as well as being a frequent featured writer for Newsvine.

We're tickled pink that he's now getting some love from the camera as well.

And if you're wondering, the answer is "no." In real life Sam is not 10 pounds lighter.

Attaboy Sammy!

Calling All Future Nonprofit Managers

This morning, I read the following stat in the new issue of Fortune Magazine:

"640,000 senior managers are needed to staff the growing nonprofit sector by 2016 - double the number of managers today. Typical pay for executives at nonprofits is projected to crack six figures in 2006, but will still trail that of the average U.S. manager by about $60,000."

Two thoughts:
1) That's a lot of managers needed. To be clear, managers are senior level brass - we're not usually talking about hands-on service providers. So, don't go hopping on the counselor, teacher or administrative assistant bandwagon just because you may strike it rich and feel like you're making a difference. Top-level managers often raise the funds, work the press, and manage the people. Will we have enough qualified and smart people able to effectively lead nonprofits in the next ten years? Some schools have management programs tailored towards the nonprofit world, and I know of folks who have made the jump from the for-profit world to the nonprofit arena and are happy (and sometimes well compensated).
2) Should nonprofit executive pay be this high? Personally, I think yes. Some nonprofits have a staff of 75+ people and provide services to thousands more. These execs raise money in the millions through networking and they have a specific set of skills and qualifications that allow them to make sure things run smoothly so that the agency is making a difference. As the article states, were one of these people to manage the same amount of people and money, at say, a hotel or brokerage firm, they would make a lot more.

In any industry, you've got to pay for talent. However, I believe the smart managers will not pad their wallets at the expense of those they serve. The best ones will find ways to raise more money, so that they can be fairly paid and their client base can increase.

Co-Authorship

We've gotten some inquiries from some of you regarding co-authorship or guest authoring for our articles. Some have sent in some great ideas that need a little fleshing out, some folks have pointed us in some right directions, and others of you are ready to start writing! Here's the deal:

We're ABSOLUTELY open to ANYONE writing for us. We can only know and learn about so much. Therefore, if you think you've got a winning '5 Minutes of Caring' piece, or you've dared to dream and taken the plunge into trying your own 'More Time On Your Hands', then send 'em in! We'll edit them to make them sound good so that they meet our requirements of tone and scope.

Depending upon the work you do, you'll either get a co-author or author credit. The less work we have to do, the more credit you get (unlike that nasty boss of yours). So, start dreaming and writing. Just make sure you take a minute (or 5) to look over the site so you know what we're looking for.

And, sadly, we don't have large bank accounts to pay you $4 a word. But, we're fans of schwag, so if you hook us up with your brainpower, we may hook up your closet or bumper.

Welcome to 'The Other Side'

Welcome to The Other Side of the Pillow, the official blog of CoolPeopleCare. For our regular members, this is where you can keep up on the latest CPC happenings, like launches in other cities, new site features, and maybe even some good social commentary once in a while.

So check back regularly. We think we have a lot to say, and hopefully you'll want to listen to it.

note from stephen: I just wanted to pop in and say hi also. Sam does most (if not all) of the writing on this site, and "The Other Side of the Pillow" should give Adam and I a safe space to contribute editorially without gumming up the works.

If you're reading this, thank you. Thank you for being a friend and living, working, eating, breathing, surfing or volunteering in a COOLPLACE.

Together we dedicated individuals can become difference makers, 5 minutes at a time.
