Cool People Speak: Go Green While Shopping

Cool People Care » » Cool People Speak: Go Green While Shopping

Back in October, we featured a fun contest in order to give away an Eco-Me home starter kit (click here to read more about Eco-Me). The contest was simple. Just tell us what you do to go green at home and a random entry will be selected to receive the prize pack.

After several entries (and one winner), you’ll find our penultimate installment in this article below. So keep reading for some creativity, ideas and inspiration, from you to us to you! Here’s what you do to go green while shopping:

Cherl says, “We try to buy only eco-friendly or all natural cleaning products. We buy local when possible.”

Eileen shares, “To help reduce the energy that I use at home, I purchased stickers that you can place over your windows that keep the sun’s heat out so that we don’t have to have the air conditioning on all the time! My roommate and I love red wine, but we also love being organic, so we started buying organic wine every time we have a craving! We have a totally organic-stocked fridge, and we share our love for organic foods with our friends every Tuesday night with Pizza and Poker night. I make organic pizzas (different kinds each time!) and we play cards all night while drinking our organic red wine!”

Kelley says, “I take my own bag when shopping. I use a reusable water bottle instead of buying bottled water. I try to purchase things made from recycled materials whenever possible.

Emily writes us, “I use a reusable shopping bag rather than using the non-biodegradable plastic bags!

Jennie offers, “I exhaust reusability before buying new. “The Story of Stuff” really moved me!”

Rebecca writes, “I do small things, like clean with vinegar, reuse bags, educate myself about green alternatives, buy organic, and use non-toxic products.”

Dawn declares, “We buy organic at the local farmers market, donate used items for re-use and look for options to buy recycled or gently used products. These seem like little things, but hopefully they are making a difference.”

Elizabeth tells us,”“I use canvas bags for shopping.

Holly writes, “I buy almost all of my food at the Farmers Market, including buying all my veggies through a CSA. I also recycle, reuse, and reduce as much as possible and make an effort to use as little water and electricity as possible.”

Brittney tells us, “We got a digital thermostat that manages the temperature in our home. Everything we own (just about) is reused; we rarely buy anything brand new. We put thought and research into where we purchase items from, in hopes of giving our resources to companies who reinvest and use it wisely. We’re vegetarians. The appliances we have bought since moving in a year ago are Energy Star.

It’s clear to see that our collective intelligence is powerful, inspirational, and truly capable of saving the world. Keep the good (green) ideas coming!
