In the first act we see Clive, his proper English wife Betty, and their proper English family living their proper English life in "darkest Africa." The second act catapults Betty and her now grown children forward in time to contemporary England. . . where relationships and roles are no clearer than before. A delightfully dark comedy, Churchill's biting and thoughtful satire plays havoc with conventions of gender, age and race, shedding stereotypes and inviting us to "become real to ourselves."
