Wildflowers 4:00 p.m. – 6:00 p.m.

Poppies and bluebonnets are not the only thing tenacious and resourceful enough to take root and blossom when they land in a fortuitous patch of soil.
The 26 artists with developmental and/or mental disabilities working at Art Enables make the same colorful and unexpected impact on their environment when they’re turned loose in an art studio. Doubters are advised to attend the opening of “Wildflowers”, Saturday May 10, 4:00 to 6:00 pm at The Gallery @ Art Enables, 411 New York Avenue, NE, Washington, DC, 20002. Free entrance. Free parking behind the building. Confusion can inadvertently be sewn when we start labeling things. Queen Anne’s Lace isn’t just hers. Foxglove has no fingers. Disability doesn’t mean no ability. The artists at Art Enables are coping with Down syndrome, autism, cerebral palsy, bipolar disorder—all sorts of disabilities—but they are producing artwork that is true, unfettered, full of energy and humor and a testimony to their abilities. That their art is also affordable is one of life’s bonuses, like the patch of Johnny-jump-ups at the edge of the playground. About Art Enables Art Enables is a 501(c)(3) not-for-profit. 60% of sales revenues go to the artists as earned income. The Art Enables studio and gallery is open Monday through Friday, 9 am to 4:30 pm, and by appointment. Visitors are welcome.
