Volunteer: Project H.E.A.L.T.H.

Sports 4 All’s Project H.E.A.L.T.H. (Helping Every American Learn To be Healthy) is a visiting recreation program designed for people with disabilities attending facility based day service providers (day care facilities).

Project H.E.A.L.T.H. provides group exercise classes including Yoga and stretching, resistance band strength training and The Rhythmic Arts Project (therapeutic drumming) to this underserved population.

Volunteer class facilitators are college students and certified personal trainers studying Health and Human Performance, Kinesiology and Nursing. Sports 4 All’s Project H.E.A.L.T.H. is a complete collaboration between Universities, facility based day service providers, people with disabilities and local supporters.

In order to build best practices, Sports 4 All is self funding a Project H.E.A.L.T.H. Pilot Program (PHPP), during the summer of 2008. Examples of participating PHPP facilities and continuing collaborative partners include Friends of Metro Parks Disability Program, Evergreen Presbyterian Ministries Day Habilitation Program and Waves, Inc. Day Service Program.

Project H.E.A.L.T.H. will begin in September, 2008 and is taught with compassion, care and a person-centered approach. Each individual participant is supported in reaching their full potential by volunteer facilitators and personal assistants.

We are in need of people who are interested in teaching yoga to people with disabilities, students studying PT, OT, ST and Health or Special Ed. This is an AWESOME opportunity to volunteer and make the lives of people with disabilities healthier and enriched.
