Spiritual Activism: Oxymoron or Perfect Fit? 9:00 a.m. – 5:00 p.m.
|
What might religious calling mean in the context of political involvement? How do we publicly express faith without imposing our views on others or blurring the line between church and state? Join us as we explore these questions while examining engagement in public life and social change as an expression of faith.
Sources will include Parker Palmer's The Active Life, Ed Chambers's Roots for Radicals, and Old and New Testament passages. This retreat is for anyone who is, or wants to be, active in public life: long-time activists, newcomers looking to share experiences, and those still discerning what serving might mean. Leader: Bill Howell After a 20-year career in architecture, Bill Howell – aided by a discernment retreat at Penuel Ridge and a training session with the Industrial Area Foundation – switched careers and became a community organizer. Today, he serves the people of Middle Tennessee as an organizer and lobbyist for Tennesseans for Fair Taxation and is Chair of the Church Council at Edgehill United Methodist Church. Cost: $50 (lunch included) Reservations required.
