Volunteer: International Newcomers' Academy all day

PENCIL Foundation is looking for volunteers who are interested in assisting some of Nashville’s newest students. The International Newcomers’ Academy of Metro Schools is a program that focuses on the needs of students who have little or no knowledge of English and have extremely limited literacy skills in their native language. Most of the current students are Somali and Somali Bantu who have been living in refugee camps and have not had the opportunity to attend school.

The International Newcomers’ Academy will provide basic math and reading skills as well as acculturation. Everything from phonics to number recognition to handwashing will be included in the curriculum. Because of the need to teach so much in a limited amount of time, volunteers are needed to give children individualized attention.

Volunteers who are interested in helping these students can contact Debby Gould, dgould@pencilfd.org or 242-3167, ext 235.
