2008 Master Composter Class 6:00 p.m.  –  8:00 p.m.

The Master Composter Class is designed to provide practical and in-depth information about backyard composting techniques & bins and institutional & municipal composting techniques and issues. The purpose of the class is to equip participants with the knowledge and skills so that they can teach others the basics of backyard composting and be informed about composting possibilities in the community.

CLASS AGENDA (subject to change):

Session #1: The Why, What & How of Composting : the issues, economics, and science behind composting

Session #2: Bin and Non-Bin Composting Methods : a comparison of composting systems

Session #3: Composting in Institutional Settings (techniques and issues at schools, businesses, municipalities and farms); and Unusual Composting (really strange stuff!)

Session #4: Compost Tea (how it's made and how it's used); and Teaching Others About Composting (how to give the basic compost mini-class and compost demonstration)

A Master Composter certificate can be earned through attendance at the classes AND participation in the Master Composter Volunteer program. To qualify for a certificate, a participant must either present 1 mini-class or conduct a compost demonstration arranged in cooperation with Metro Beautification. Mini-classes are usually 30 minutes long and held at public libraries; Metro Beautification arranges these classes with the libraries. Compost demonstrations are presented at Metro Beautification booths at public events ; volunteers staff the booth for 1-2 hours to answer composting questions from the general public and show how to use the Earth Machine and Green Cone Composters. Other volunteer activities may also be used to qualify participants for the Master Composter Certificate.

COST: $40, includes materials.
